Russian anonymous street art against war 2022/23 – A virtual exhibition

Уличное антивоенное анонимное искусство в России 2022/23 – Виртуальная выставка

In March 2022, the author of the exhibition idea, Alexandra Arkhipova, asked the subscribers of her Telegram-channel "(Non)entertaining anthropology" (https://t.me/anthro_fun) to send examples of anonymous anti-war street art, on the condition that they had personally seen the pictured object. This request spread widely, and people sent photos from all over Russia. The creation and processing of the collection by the exhibition team continued from March 2022 to February 2023. As a result, the exhibition presents 471 exhibits from 48 cities and towns of Russia.

Not being art historians, we did not aim to select artistically valuable artefacts. That is why "street art" in the exhibition’s title is somewhat misleading. What is important for us is the creative intention of the authors of anti-war graffiti, the search for their own way of communicating their thoughts to the viewer, the choice of place, the play with surrounding signs and space.

We were interested in the diversity of types of expression, placement and artistic execution, so when selecting examples we were guided by the principle of selecting "every creature in a pair" and we did not take repeated texts with the same codes. As a result, we cannot draw any statistical conclusions about the frequency of graffiti distribution by type or city - this is not what we were aiming for.

Автор идеи выставки - Александра Архипова - в марте 2022 года обратились к подписчикам своего ТГ-канала “(Не)занимательная антропология” (https://t.me/anthro_fun) с просьбой присылать примеры антивоенного уличного анонимного искусства, с условием, что автор фотографии видел объект своими глазами. Эта просьба широко распространилась, и люди присылали свои фотографии из самых разных уголков России. Создание и обработка коллекции выставочной командой продолжалось в период с марта 2022 по февраль 2023 года. В результате на выставке представлено 471 экспонатов из 48 больших и малых городов России.

Не являясь искусствоведами, мы не ставили своей целью отбирать художественно ценные артефакты. Поэтому название “коллекция уличного искусства” несколько условно. Для нас важна творческая интенция авторов антивоенных граффити, поиск собственного способа донесения мысли до зрителя, выбор места, игра с окружающими знаками и пространством.

Нас интересовало разнообразие типов высказывания, размещения и художественного исполнения, поэтому при отборе примеров мы руководствовались принципом отбора “каждой твари по паре” и мы не брали повторяющиеся тексты с одинаковыми кодами. В результате по содержанию коллекции нельзя сделать никаких статистических выводов о частотности распределения граффити по типам или городам, но мы и не ставили такой задачи.

CaZgo200

"Cargo200" (KIA) is a Soviet military slang term for "killed in action" used during the war in Afganistan in the 1980's. It became popular again at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In the Russian, the "z" sound of the word "GruZ" is Latinized and capitalized to make a reference to the letter "Z," one of the symbols of Russia's invasion. This inscription was written above the advertisement promoting a private military company. The message can thus be decoded as follows: "Russia will kill you by sending you off to this war and it will hide all the information about you when you are killed.".

«Груз-200» — на советском военном сленге обозначение погибших в бою, использовавшееся во время войны в Афганистане в 1980-х годах. Оно снова стало популярным с началом российского вторжения в Украину в 2022 году. В русском языке слово «ГруЗ» латинизировано с заглавной буквы, чтобы сделать отсылку к букве «Z», одному из символов этой войны. Эта надпись была написана над рекламой частной военной компании. Сообщение можно расшифровать так: «Россия убьет вас, отправив на эту войну, и скроет всю информацию о вас, когда вас убьют».

A reference to the Russian Newspeak (as in Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four) of 2022, where one should say "Special Military Operation" instead of "war". The authors of such graffiti are fighting propaganda in Russia by reminding those who see graffiti that propaganda constantly swaps black and white, just as in Orwell's book.

Bucha

In March 2022, the Russian military brutally murdered many residents of the town of Bucha in the Kiev region. In the Russian Federation, it is not allowed to talk about this; any mention of these murders is punishable under Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code (dissemination of knowingly false information about the Russian Army). Several people have already received seven or more years in prison for discussing the murders in Bucha.

I will write you to save this space of memory during the war. Is it possible it will be endless? It seems like a horrible dream. One wants to break away and to wake up. To think about you, remembering the apricots in your garden.
My Moscow friends didn’t understand why I don’t like apricots. I overate them every summer, they lay everywhere, and my shoes were covered in yellowish mush. I only came to love them years later.
But here in Moscow there are no such apricots – as sweet and honeyed as those taken right off the vine.
We liked to gather them in our childhood, because we liked to climb onto the tree and to watch from the top on your house. To watch the hens, to listen to the words carried by the wind, and see what happens behind the fence – slow, hot, beloved and tasty Ukrainian summer.

In April 2022, an artist began writing letters to her deceased grandmothers and hanging them in a Moscow park. In doing so, she aimed to draw the attention of park visitors to the fact that exactly the same people live in Ukraine.

В детстве мы любили их собирать, потому что нравилось залезать на дерево и смотреть с высоты на ваш дом, нагло снующих соседских, кур, прислушиваться к разговорам, которые доносит ветер, видеть, что происходит за забором – медленное, жаркое, такое любимое и вкусное украинское лето.

В апреле 2022 года одна художница стала писать письма своим покойным бабушкам и развешивать их в одном из московских парков. Тем самым она хотела привлечь внимание посетителей парка к тому, что в Украине живут точно такие же люди.

Weekly inflation is at its highest since 1998 because of our military operations in Ukraine. Stop the war.

After the start of the war, one of the ways to break the "information blockade" was to change price tags in stores. The idea of this action belongs to the Feminist Anti-war Movement. Instead of giving the price for an item, these price tags provided information about the destruction of Ukrainian cities and future inflationary consequences for Russians. 14 people in different cities were detained for this action, earning fines and (in two cases) criminal prosecution. One of those who was arrested for this action was the noted St. Petersburg artist Sasha Skochilenko. She was detained in April 2022 and is still in prison awaiting sentencing, facing up to 10 years in prison.

Одним из арестованных за эту акцию стала известная питерская художница Саша Скочиленко. Она была задержала в апреле 2022 года и до сих пор в тюрьме ожидает приговора. За подмену ценники ей грозит наказание до 10 лет лишения свободы.

During the late Soviet Union years, the “Swan Lake” ballet was an important part of the mourning events following the deaths of political leaders (Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko). Entertainment shows were cancelled, and television and radio broadcast classical music — and specifically Swan Lake — for hours. In 1991, during the coup attempt, Swan Lake replaced entertainment programmes and cancelled news once again. After the beginning of the war, references to Swan Lake — usually through the emblematic dance of little swans — became a very popular hidden message. Thus, graffiti with headless figures of ballerinas performing the dance of little swans symbolises hope for Putin's removal or death.

Fake IKEA ad with a QR code that contains a link to "Nastoyaschee vremya" (Current Time TV), an anti-Putin Youtube channel.

After the war began, IKEA left Russia, and before closing it announced a clearance sale. Anti-war activists pasted anouncements with QR-codes which allegedly linked to commercial propositions, like bulk sugar purchase or sales of the goods from now-closed IKEA Russia. In fact, the QR-codes contained links to the independent Current Time TV, where daily uncensored news from Ukraine is streamed.

"Liberation of Kiev by the Soviet Army" is a mural panel at the Kievskaya metro station in Moscow. A sticker with the word “Zombie” — using the Roman Z in place of the Cyrillic З — was attached, inverting the Soviet message and indicating that Russian troops were trying to capture Kiev. The Z character is the official sign of support for the war.
